Our Poetry

This page contains a short collection of some of the poems that both Sandra (my wife) and I have written over the years. The poems have been written in all sorts of places, wherever the sudden mood and inclinations occurs. Both Sandra and I totally agree that poetry is not prescriptive, you can't just sit down and write a poem, like any art form, you need to be inspired - wherever that inspiration comes from. Poems are written for all sorts of reasons, love, from the heart, deeply in love, lost or broken, humour, description, to tell a story or recount an event, whimsy, sadness, despair. longing and, for many other reasons. This collection of our poems is driven by heart felt feelings of love, mythology and fantasy.

All material is, of course, copyright and cannot be reproduced or published in any way without the Author's express permission.

Whether you love them or loath them, I hope you nonetheless read them and please DO make a comment in our Guest Book.

"The Welsh Choir"

I was in Rose O'Grady's (as the name suggests, an Irish Pub in Northbridge, Perth) at the time with a Welsh friend of mine. After quite a few guinesses, he was feeling very homesick and was looking for something that reminded him of home. He was very upset and sad and we shared some tears. Several unused coasters were on our table and I happened to have a pen in my pocket...

Colin Molloy

Deep inside an old wood Inn
A murmur soft is heard
Too late for piper, shrill and twist
Too cold outside for bird

A baritone breaks loose above...
The soulful stirring meld
Across the hold he steps inside
A wondrous sight is held

Against far wall a flickering light
Made dancing by the fire
Almost as soft upon the eyes
As ears from welsh choir

Not a well dressed group you see...
A rough and ready lot
And yet, the lilting tones a hue
Stir feelings long forgot

A lump arise within the throat
A tear down one cheek
And yet a smile breaks on the lips
And deep inside you seek...

A precious hour stole from the world
Where you can hide low
Cast in amongst the shadows long
Emotions, let them flow...

"Vows"

This poem was written to capture in some (I hope) small way the truly wonderful experience of exchanging vows with my truly beautiful wife Sandra. We were married on Friday March 30, 2001...

Colin Molloy

Emotions bright, lights turned down
Hushed whispers heard no other sound
Than pounding hearts and nervous breaths
Eyes cast together and trembling depths

As we faced and swallowed often
Tears checked, two faces soften
We spoke our vows so quivering thin
Love swelled from deep and felt within

My lips moved her eyes were felled
My cheek rained tears not to be held
Engulfed by love I would not falter
This finest moment true heart's alter

Horns were blown the angels sang
Every fibre of my love rang
A warmth sprang through me, a garden spring
On each our hand we placed a ring

Immersed in feelings beyond word
Yet those felt, could be heard
Enriched forever in my life
I free give vows my beautiful wife

"The Man I Never Knew"

I wish I had of met Colin's father. Sadly, he passed away before I knew Colin and I never had the chance of meeting him. Colin has spoken of him often and recounted so many stories and events. Though I never met him, I feel I know him, not only by and through Colin's words, but through Colin himself, his values and his perspectives. He obviously had a profound influence on Colin's life and I know Colin misses him dearly and profoundly wished that I could have met him.

Sandra Molloy

Though we have never met
A thing I'll long regret
I've heard him speak of you
With such awe, reverence and pride

A love he cannot hide
And though we have not met
I feel I know you yet
I see your face each day

Acknowledge it and say
Thank you
For the seed that you have sown
Has undoubtedly grown

Your passion knowledge and yearning
To understand, discussing, learning
with talented friends and all
You I oft adore

All this and more you have passed on
I feel a sense of loss, tis there
That I cannot experience
The love and pride he has in You

I can only look on with respect
With what carries on in him from you
Although you'll never know
I feel I love you so

There is a spiritual connection between us

"Life"

How strange the bends and twists our life's path Seems to take
And yet when it has happened
There can seem no other way
We've had to cope with many things
Both serious and fair
And just when we have had our fill
Too much no more can bear
God smiles and says
"Strength you have still for I made you strong
...and you will cope with this"
To our own amazement we do,
we find the courage to continue...
...and begin anew
We do not always handle things...
the way we would like to...but
In retrospect we've done ok
We have survived the torrid day
And so we look with hearts uplifted
To brighter skies and rosier pictures
We hold each other and smile and know
That out of this our love has grown stronger
We think to ourselves
If we can
Be together through this and still care
Imagine how good it will be
when things are going smoothly
While two new stars shine on the horizon
Holding our hopes and fears...
...for a brighter year
Just when you think everything is ok
There is just one thing more you have to deal with
Or two...or three.......

"The Elfin Dance of Hearts"

Written in a flight of fantasy...

On a cool still night with soft breaths of air dappled by a filter warmth
From a smiling celestial lunar sojourn pays but a brief waiting moment
Each fresh grass blade moistened by droplets of the evening dew
Carefully parted by toes borne of hesitance from a shy intrusion

Their hesitant tiny steps all but part and dent the grasses nubile chutes
Glances all around and back and steps taken ever so carefully...
After moments seeming long, the procession filters still hesitant
Their gossamer attire in green with footwear pointing the way

Amidst the glade the old oak tree, gnarled by age and absence of care
Toward they stealth twixt held breath and tipping stance
As they approach they ring the tree and linked in arms begin their dance...

Almost at first, but gradually more and more the certain sway takes form
To and fro, to and fro the direction seems in indecision
Then almost as if it never started the circle's direction becomes unfaltered
As their tiny feet move atop the blades and in this circle stemming out from roots

Of old a wondrous glow begins
Small at first, perhaps a missed lunar sparkle but in time undeniable
Each spark joins the next moving outwards in a circle

Creeping inexorably across the glade to touch upon the elfin heels
And at each touch a deft flick sends the spark skywards
The moon above in it's brief stopping moment smiles and glows
As if an aura has been lit from down below

In between the oaks stretched hands and the moon above
The sky begins to cradle a sparken form
On and on the Elfin dance continues a shy momentary glance above allowed
The form is almost complete but stops

At glades edge a horse, one horn awaits
Her silken white coat shining alit from moon above
Brushing from a hedge grow steps a solitary human man
He waits patiently and respectfully

The one horned horse, she moves towards him
His human hand held out in friendship trust and love
The man's glowing smile holds up his tears of joy
Elves kneel down in candid awe and the sparks take final form
The Heart of pure love it falls across the meeting place

The man and unicorn
The glitter shape complete, the shine of love anoints
Elves depart and where never there
And the old oak grows older
And the moon moves across the darkened sky
But their love lives on forever...

"A Poem of My Love"

You and I have touched the sky and the clouds have caressed our heart
We will not hide what's deep inside though we be far apart
Together we have rode the rough and shared the loving smooth
We've cried, we've tried at times love died or so we thought to move

Then with love's great understanding, we bridge the painful hurdle
With leap of faith and love and trust the distance we so girdle
We know we love each other for every star lit sky
We've laid together in naked truth and know we'd never lie

With profound felt love and great respect with hurt and not deception
We've shared our fears our hopes and dreams sporned of deep perception
Our love was born we shared a dream that one day soon we'd kiss
Together in each other arms at last - to share what's missed

On different hours across the miles we've closed our eyes for vision
To feel the ocean tide of love to cast pains self derision
YOU have had your share Of life's most recent blunder
Snuck up on you your heart askew to hurt you soul to wonder

Where we are and why we are and if the "US" is right
I know at times my words have pained Your heart abrupt with flight
But borne on winds your dove of love alarmed to spread it wings
I know deep down with all my soul how gentle my heart sings

For every moment passed and sun that travels sky
My heart is filled profound with love for you - it makes me cry
To think the times that I've caused hurt and blade your tender heart
Upon a stake of sadness - from now a gentle start

Let's fold back your wings and rest my love in all your pure white charm
I'll hold you close and softly kiss those spots I've caused to harm
And when through life and death it threatens to muddy OUR pond of love
I'll caress and nurture with soft words it's US I hold above

The things outside our passion, outside our naked sharing
Outside the moaning kisses, outside our mutual caring
For I believe with all my heart, for what we share still special
Is worth the tie between our hearts not borne of flimsy metal

My love for you is castle strong With foundations deep in earth
With tower dreams built in the sky and stone of love and mirth
Washed by tears, bonded by faith, it stands alone and strong
Upon the hill of mediocrity, its light is shining long.
